Iquitos, Peru is known as the # 1 tourism destination in Peru. Iquitos is rich in culture and history dating back to the Indigenous tribes, to the Spanish conquest, the rubber boom and to the modern day city it is. Otorongo Lodge is located 54 miles downstream from Iquitos on a small tributary to the Amazon called Quebrada Oran. The village of Oran was actually a major site for trade on the Amazon River even before its discovery by Francisco De Orellana in the 1500´s. When Francisco De Orellana sailed down the Napo River from Ecuador in 1542 he came to where Napo empties into the Amazon. They saw the Amazon River so immense that they believed they had reached the Atlantic Ocean! Only 15 kilometers downstream from this historical event is the village of Oran.
Otorongo Lodge is perfect for its proximity to high and lowland primary Rainforest. The land behind the lodge is one of the 7 climatic refuges in the Amazon River Basin and boasts the highest biodiversity of plants and animals.
The city is far, the earth is near. Gaze into the stars of the Southern Hemisphere. Fall asleep to the sweet serenade of the rainforest life.
